As summer fades, it’s time to embrace the back-to-school routine with intuitive eating and smart snacking strategies for kids.

In healing my relationship with food, I’ve come to realize how deeply diet culture shaped the way I used to think about my kids’ lunches and snacks. I wasn’t just feeding them, I was curating meals with an underlying pressure, as if what I packed somehow reflected our family’s values or my success as a parent.
Looking back, I recognize my privilege. I could stock a pantry with variety and send my kids to school with nourishing options. Even having the space to worry about whether a chocolate muffin might be judged by a teacher is rooted in privilege; not all families have the same choices or mental bandwidth.
Still, the pressure I felt was real. I wanted them to have enough food to fuel their day and to enjoy it. And yet, I'd often second-guess whether their lunchbox measured up to some imagined standard. Would the teacher raise an eyebrow at a store-bought snack instead of a perfectly packed bento of rainbow veggies? Probably not. But that worry? That was diet culture whispering in my ear.
Intuitive lunch and snacks for kids made simple
Children are incredibly perceptive; they soak up our cues, spoken or not. If they hear us label certain foods as “good” or “bad,” they internalize that. If we stress over a snack choice, they learn that food is something to be anxious about.
I’ve since realized that those performative choices extended beyond the lunchbox. Ordering a “healthier” option at dinner with a friend, even when I wanted something else, was the same mindset in disguise.
Permission to let go

I’m grateful for this journey toward intuitive eating, not just for me, but for the ripple effect it’s had on how we approach lunch and snacking for kids in our home. And let me tell you, it's a beautiful thing to pack a lunch without second-guessing a muffin.
Because no one is policing their snacks—not even me!
